Avatar Medical and Kyber Awarded €3.7 Million to Widen Access to Immersive 3D Imaging in Hospitals

A patient’s ability to see and understand their own anatomy shouldn’t depend on which room of the hospital they are in. The Avatar MediVerse project aims to make immersive, patient-specific 3D visualization accessible throughout the hospital.

PARIS – 28 September 2026 – Avatar Medical and Kyber today announced they have been awarded up to €3.7 million through the French government’s France 2030 program to develop Avatar MediVerse, a project designed to make immersive patient-specific 3D medical imaging available wherever clinicians and patients need it.

Today, showing a patient or clinician anatomy in true, glasses-free 3D requires significant computing power located alongside the display, which can limit access to specially equipped rooms. MediVerse is designed to shift that computing power to a remote location and stream the immersive 3D experience in real time. A surgeon could show a patient the tumor they are preparing to remove during a consultation, access the same patient-specific anatomy while planning the procedure, and bring that view into the operating room.

Avatar MediVerse combines two complementary French technologies. Avatar Medical brings Avatar Medical Vision, its FDA-cleared and CE-marked software that converts standard CT and MRI scans into interactive, lifelike 3D visualizations without requiring manual segmentation, along with experience working with more than 20 hospitals across the U.S. and Europe. Kyber brings its patented ultra-low-latency XR streaming and remote rendering technology, providing the infrastructure needed to stream and interact with that complex visual information remotely. Unlike streaming a conventional flat video, delivering true depth requires sending a separate image to each eye in real time, fast enough for the anatomy to respond immediately as a clinician moves or rotates it for better viewing.

“Interacting with medical imaging in real time is one of the hardest latency problems there is.” said Jean-Baptiste Kempf, CEO of Kyber. “A delay that would be invisible in a video call breaks the image entirely when each eye is receiving its own view. Solving it is what makes the rest possible. By combining Avatar Medical’s immersive visualization with Kyber’s real-time streaming infrastructure, MediVerse is designed to make those interactions seamless across locations and devices. It is a strong example of how French deep-tech innovation can address a meaningful, real-world healthcare challenge.”

For Avatar Medical, MediVerse is an important step in its broader vision of Visual Intelligence for Surgery, making patient-specific visual information available throughout the surgical care journey rather than tying advanced visualization to a single workstation or room. By separating the computing power from where the images are viewed, MediVerse could make interactive 3D visualization more scalable across hospitals, health systems and geographically distributed care environments.

“We chose to build this with the best real-time technology available, and it happens to be French,” said Elodie Litzler, deputy CEO and co-founder of Avatar Medical. “Neither of us could do this alone. What we are after is not simply new equipment in hospitals, but a change in how patients and clinicians understand what they are looking at, and where that understanding can take place.”

Built on open-source technologies, the project also aims to give hospitals greater control over their infrastructure and reduce their dependence on proprietary remote visualization platforms.

The award was granted through France 2030’s “Innovative Technologies for Immersive Virtual Worlds” call for projects following evaluation by an independent expert committee, with Bpifrance overseeing implementation on behalf of the French government.
